Muse-frontman Matt Bellamy onthult dat hun officiële soundtrack van de Olympische Spelen bijna een duet met Elton John was geweest.
Het trio vertelde eerder al dat hun nieuwe single 'Survival' in eerste instantie bedoeld was als duet, maar ze wilden nooit vertellen met wie. Het enige dat ze loslieten was dat het om een 'goede pianist' ging.
In een interview met het radiostation KROQ onthulde Matt een paar dagen geleden dat die 'goede pianist' niemand minder dan Elton John is. En Matt onthulde nog meer. Hij vertelde dat Elton John ook was aangesteld als de 'musical director' van de Spelen, maar dat hij zich later heeft teruggetrokken. Underworld heeft daarna de functie overgenomen.
Matt: "Believe it or not, Elton John gave us a call and wanted to write a song for the Olympics. At one time Elton John was actually the director of the music for the Olympics. He contacted us and we thought 'This is far out! We're going to do a song for the Olympics with Elton John?!'"
Volgens Matt trok Elton John zich terug, omdat hij ruzie kreeg met de organisatie. "So that's how the ball started rolling way back over a year ago. But then he pulled out of the Olympics. He didn't want to be involved anymore cause he fell out with the organisers so that left us with a half-baked idea. At that point we just let it go and carried on with making the album."
De organisatie van de Olympische Spelen benaderde de band later alsnog voor de eindceremonie. Muse liet ze toen ook 'Survival' horen waar de organisatie zo enthousiast over was, dat ze het uitriepen tot officiële soundtrack.
